Recently, the inventor of the Science Citation Index, now the Web of Science, passed away. Garfield was instrumental in the creation of the quantitative study of science and technology. He also played a role in the early years of 4S with respect to science studies and the history of science, in collaboration with Derek de Solla Price and Robert Merton.
